Training Your Clients to Improve Shoulder Range of Motion and Reducing Chronic Tightness and Discomfort

Welcome to the fifth edition of Integrative Movement Insider™ (IMI) for 2019.

It’s hard to believe that 4 weeks of this year have already passed.

Before I get into the content for this week’s IMI, I want to ask you something…

Are you being purposeful in your daily routine and actively taking steps towards accomplishing your goals this year?

Jenice and I have the goal to support health and fitness professionals just like you make this your best year ever.

In the first IMI of this year I discussed how the A, B, C’s Aligning with your purpose, Being consistent, and Coaching – can help you make this year your best year ever.

So, are you aligning with your purpose (your ‘Why’), being consistent in your efforts by maintaining a regular routine, and getting coaching?

If so, congratulations! You are doing better than 80% of individuals who create New Year’s Resolutions and have already abandoned their goals…

If you aren’t, what steps can you take today to get yourself on track to making this your best year ever?

Now, on to this week’s edition of IMI…

————————————————————————————————————————

Wednesday, Jenice and I are off to Reston, VA to teach the Integrative Movement System™ Approach to Posture and Movement.

On Days 2 and 3 of The Integrative Corrective Exercise Instructor™ Certification Program, we will be covering assessment, corrective exercises, and functional movement progressions for the shoulder complex.

In last week’s edition of IMI, I shared with you a simple assessment as well as one of our go-to corrective exercises for improving your client’s shoulder range of motion as well as their stability.

If you missed that video, you can access it below.

I also shared with you why assessment is so important to you and your clients…

Because if you don’t know how to properly assess the shoulder, then you don’t know which exercises are best for your client and which exercises can actually cause your client shoulder problems.

Understanding how to properly assess the shoulder will allow you to identify a common cause of your client’s shoulder tightness.

I also shared with you one of the most important things you need to first stop doing with many of your clients with shoulder issues is to have them stop squeezing ‘down and back…’

As I mentioned, squeezing the shoulders ‘down and back’ disrupts the optimal position and movement of the shoulder blades…

Now, the next most important thing you should be doing is helping your client release restrictions that are causing the forward shoulder…

You’ll likely need to release muscles like the pec minor, latissimus dorsi, as well as muscles under the arm like teres major…

…however, recall that your assessments direct you to where your client needs specific release.

And you’ll need to teach the individual how to optimally stabilize their scapula upon their rib cage.

The Supported Hip Hinge – which I demonstrated in last week’s video – is a great pattern for lengthening the muscles mentioned above and for improving shoulder stability.

Once you release the restrictions, lengthen the tight muscles, and improve shoulder stability, now you will help your client integrate this information into the functional pushing and pulling patterns.

The Overhead Shoulder Press is a pattern most of our clients should be doing however…

…many of them don’t have the range of motion or stability required to do it without causing and perpetuating shoulder and neck issues.

Also, many clients are doing exercises like Front DB Raises which are directly contributing to their shoulder and neck issues.

At 3:00pm today, I’ll be on Facebook demonstrating how to properly perform overhead exercises with your client’s that have limited range of motion…

…and why common exercises like Front DB Raises create and perpetuate shoulder problems for the majority of your clients.

We are sharing this information with you so that you can help your current clients that present with shoulder issues as well as so you can become the local go-to resource for all those individuals experiencing chronic shoulder problems and need a qualified fitness professional to work with.

And if you’re not on Facebook no worries…

…all our videos are uploaded onto our website (The Institute for Integrative Health and Fitness Education – www.iihfe.com) and YouTube channel (Fitness Education Seminars)

If you’re on Instagram, you can also check out @iifhe as we send out tons of free video content and motivation there as well…

…in fact, I’ve been sharing shoulder exercises for the entire month of January.

See you later!

If you missed it, you can access last week’s video here.

Sincerely,

Evan, Jenice & the Team at IIHFE
